Homeless in Houston

One day, I was walking feeling sorry for myself because there is a recession and I was worried about what would happen and how I would survive. Then I met this man. His name was Ezekiel. He was homeless. He said to me, Do you live near here? ( Why is this homeless guy asking me where I live?), I said, where is your family? He avoided the question and said, Hey! You have an accent1 Where are you from? I said, I am from Jamaica, where are you from? ( Do you believe this? I am there talking to a homeless man, the people walking by must think I am crazy… well I am actually crazy…but even when I was 5 years old I remember my mom taught me not to talk to strangers.). Ezekiel said he was from Louisiana. So I asked him again, where is your family and why did you come to Houston? Again he avoided my question and told me that he went to Jamaica a long time ago when he went on a cruise… a cruise?!?! He could afford to go on a cruise? Intresting… that means he must have been living a descent lif...

Comparing New York and Houston

A PLACE TO LIVE In NY for $1500, you could get a basement apartment. In Houston, for $1500 you could get a luxury apartment on Westheimer with a jacuzzi...or you could pay mortgage on a house. In NY for $300,000, you copuld buy a decent townhouse. In Houston, for $300,000 you can buy 2 townhouses, each one double the size of the one in NY, with a huge backyard for plenty of Barbecues and plenty of space for your little ones to chase each other around. TRANSPORTATION NY has one of the best mass transportation systems in America. Houston has one of the worst and most inefficient mass transportation systems in America. NY most people dont own a car, and they take the bus or subway. Houston most people I know, own a car AND an F150 Truck. As a matter of fact, when i first came here, I heard the advertisement telling me everyday how "this is Ford country". Most people in Houston cant imagine what it must be like to take the bus. I am presently, the only person in Houston who do...

Houston reacts to Snow

Over 500 cars in accidents in Houston since the snow started last night. Then all the major freeways start to get blocked or shut down. Remember, this is supposed to be the 4th largest city in the United States. Houstonians are not used to snow. Or Rain. Everytime the weather gets extreme (which is anything that does not resemble 99 degrees Heatwave, these people panic and start doing silly things on the road. True, there are many people who can drive better than me, but many people in Houston seem to have bought their license at Walmart and are making it really hard for the sensible drivers. Anyway, everyone please be careful on the roads, especially in this silly season!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

W0W! I am sooo full! I can hardly move! There should be thanksgiving like once per month! Americans sure do know how to have a feast! And you know how they do EVERYTHING BIG in TEXAS!!! Any international person should surely be delighted if they visit America during Thanksgiving! They will experience love and warmth and go back to their countries with happy images of America and it's people imprinted on their brains! I dont celebrate thanksgiving in Jamaica, so it is not that much of a tradition to me, but i sure dont mind adopting this tradition! Anyway I hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving! I hope everyone is experiencing the love and happiness that comes with having your family and friends all around and be thankful and appreciative of all that this holiday stands for! Corny Joke: Why did the turkey cross the road? Because it saw nichole coming! ha ha : )

People in Houston love high gas prices

I am of the firm belief that people in Houston looooove high gas prices. If they didn't they would have done something about it. Look at the public transportation system. Most people dont use it. However they complain about gas prices. If they were really upset about gas prices, they would complain, they would march down to the office of the member of congress that represents them and demand that something be done. Houston is the United States fourth most largest city and it does not have an effective mass transportation system. Unbelievable!

Hurricane Ike in Houston

Hurricane Ike. Well this was the first hurricane I had experienced since Hurricane Gilbert had hit Jamaica in 1988. Many people in Houston were not prepared for this hurricane because after the mass hysteria with the Hurricane Rita evacuation, people just didn't feel like going through that trauma again. Then the irony was that Houston was prepared for Rita and it did not hit. At the last minute it changed course. So many people did not take Ike seriously. I was not really impressed by Ike. That was probably because it it didnt hit my neighbourhood as hard as it hit some other parts of Houston. What I was really impressed by was how Ike could shut down the 4th largest city in the United States for one week. I don't get it. I thought Houston was supposed to be the Energy Capital of the United States. So I was one of the residents of Houston who had no power for 10 days after the Hurricane. I told all my friends it was just like being back in Jamaica. I had no light, no AC, ...
