The Struggles of Undocumented Mexicans in the United States

Many people come to America from Mexico as children. They are enrolled in school, they are allowed to get education even up to college level like Masters and PhDs. However they can’t work without a work permit and they have to reapply every year which they do. They can’t leave the US because if they do it’s hard for them to re-enter. They live in the US all their lives because that is the only life they know. They can’t go back to Mexico because they have no family there and even if they went, it would be a foreign place to them because they lived all their lives in the US. I met many individuals like this when I was in college. Even though they have gone to school in the United States from childhood to college, they are still treated as if they are international students

Having A Good Attitude Towards Working Is Important

Image
This blog is dedicated to my younger family and friends and it is meant to inspire them to have a good attitude towards working and striving for their goals. I had the great opportunity to work and study at Houston Community College. I worked in the Dean’s Office and I was fortunate to be trained by a former IBM executive. The Dean’s office managed the student services for over 70,000 students enrolled.    Imagine applying for a job and finding out that your work will influence 70,000 lives. It was a very exciting experience to work for the Dean of Student Services.  The Dean’s office felt like a revolving door of students. Students from diverse ethnicities from countries all over the world, ages and experiences.   70,000 was a mind   boggling number for me. But I just happened to be in the right place at the right time because the training I received I could nothave gained that anywhere else.  Unfortunately it was the time that Enr...

My first Job in London

Would you like some fries with that?...My first Job in London....McDonald's UK in 2002 when I was 22 yrs old. I went to the UK on a student exchange visa. I thought my resume was so impressive. My resume was so impressive if I was an employer, I would hire me. I walked the streets of London with about 50 resumes. I was confident that I could work and go to Medical school. I was in the greatest city of the  world with not even 1 cent in my pocket to enjoy it. I could get no jobs. Only McDonald's was hiring. So I applied to McDonald's and was hired! Yaaay!!! Suddenly I had money in my pocket that I earned. I did not beg it. borrow it, steal it. It was the greatest feeling in the world. I even made enough to buy a £50 day trip return ticket on the Eurostar to Paris. I was even able to save some money towards paying back some of the tuition fees I owed to the University of the West Indies. One day I was at McDonald's and I spilled the entire contents if the milkshake by ac...

Health and Education Crisis In Houston

I feel moved to blog about the present health and education crisis that exists in Houston. It is just alarming! I hope others who are in the position to help, may read this blog and take steps toward addressing this problem. As the “Oil and Gas” Capital and the fourth largest city in the United States,  with approximately 2.1 million people, many people living in Houston are below the poverty line and cannot afford health care, cannot speak English, and do not know how to access healthcare. There are many smart, talented young people graduating from high school /college, however there are jobs available but  no one to provide direction and teach them how to use their skills to obtain a job. Many social programs exist but are not accessible to poor minorities (Black, Hispanic, Asian minorities like Phillipino, Cambodian, Vietnamese). Many people "graduate" from high school but still are not competent in basic academic skills like Reading and Writing English Language a...
